Welcome All UH ASCE student chapter recap
The UH Manoa ASCE Student Chapter took 57 students and their faculty advisor, Dr. Oceana Francis, to participate in 10 technical and 7 non-technical events at the ASCE Pacific Southwest Symposium (PSWS) at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona on April 3– April 5, 2025. The team placed 5th overall in the conference of 14 schools. The Steel Bridge team won top 5th place overall at conference, including 1st place in aesthetics, 2nd place in cost estimation, 2nd place in stiffness, 3rd place in structural efficiency, and 3rd place in lightness. The Prestressed Concrete Beam won 2nd place. The concrete canoe team won 4th place overall, including 4th in technical report & presentation, 5th in Final Product Prototype, 2nd place in men’s sprints, 3rd place in women’s sprint, and 2nd place in Co-ed sprints. The mead technical paper placed 7th in the Technical Paper competition, the Geowall event team placed 11th, the Transportation Design event team placed 7th, the Design Build Construction team placed 4th, the Sustainability event team placed 5th, Environmental Design team placed 6th, the Surveying team placed 6th, and Richard Scranton Community Service placed 7th. In non-technical events, Flag football placed 3rd, Corn hole place 4th, Volleyball placed 5th, Tug-of-War placed 6th, Scavenger Hunt placed 7th, Basketball placed 8th, and Soccer placed 12th.
The entire team worked very hard preparing for this annual conference and all were great competitors in Pomona, CA. The PSWS is the largest ASCE conference in the USA and the most competitive. The UHM Conference Co-Chairs were Kylie Trangn and John Mark Villanueva who worked tirelessly to ensure everything worked out well and everyone had a good time. The chapter was led in this past year by the following officers: President – Travis Nitta; Vice-President – Aaryk Iwamoto; Treasurer – Amier Ishaque; Recording Secretary – Zoe Fukuda-Seki and Corresponding Secretary – Dawn Nakamaru.
The Student Chapter is very grateful to the 30 companies, the College of Engineering, ASCE Hawaii Section, and UH Manoa SAPFB who together made donations/grants totaling over $40,000 to help enable the team to prepare for and participate in PSWS in Pomona, CA this year.
All committees including Community Service, Outreach, Social and Conference have achieved the goals. In addition, 4 current board members and faculty advisor Dr. Francis attended WSCL, a series of annual training sessions for ASCE student chapter leaders to network, share ideas, meet society leaders, and learn how to help their chapter succeed in San Diego, California on January 17-18, 2025.
