Title: Development of Performance Based Tsunami Engineering – PBTE

Abstract: This presentation will report on current research at the
University of Hawaii at Manoa to develop Performance Based Tsunami
Engineering. This 4-year research project is funded by the National
Science Foundation as part of the Network for Earthquake Engineering
Simulation (NEES) research network. A series of experiments has just
been completed at the Tsunami Wave Basin at Oregon State University.
These experiments were designed to improve our understanding of tsunami
inundation, sediment transport and scour, and loading on coastal
structures. Preliminary results of these experiments will be presented
along with plans for large scale tests at the same facility. The
culmination of this research effort will be the development of tsunami
design of coastal infrastructure for inclusion in relevant building codes.
