Shanghai is one of the biggest megapolitan regions in the world. Though the economic benefits of development are evident, the negative environmental impacts are severe in Shanghai and other big cities in China.

Tongji University in Shanghai is one of the leading universities directly under the State Ministry of Education of China.  Formerly Tongji German Medical School, Tongji University was established in 1907. It was given its present name and became a state university in 1927. The name Tongji suggests "cooperating by riding the same boat".

The College of Environmental Science and Engineering at Tongji was the earliest teaching and research institution in the field of environmental science and engineering in China. From the Department of Sanitary Engineering in 1952, the college has developed into the Department of Environmental Engineering, School of Environmental Engineering, College of Environmental Science and Engineering.  Recently, the College was chosen by the United Nations Environment Programme to be an Institute for Environment and Sustainable Development.

In this seminar, Dr. Xia will give a detailed explanation of (1) what's happened in more than half a century in environmental issues in China?  (2) why the United Nations Environment Programme chose Tongji University to establish its Institute for Environment and Sustainable Development? and (3) Environmental conservation of Three-Gorges Reservoir.
